Program Reflection
Having worked in libraries for a few years before considering pursuing a master's degree in library and information science, I was curious to know more about the scholarly content of the studies. When comparing schools and listening to my peers' experiences, I sought a program that would complement my work and home-life schedule, and that offered coursework similar to what I wanted to accomplish in my career. The University of Alabama had everything I was looking for, and it thrilled me to get accepted.
During orientation, it put me at ease to see how approachable the SLIS staff are. I heard my peer classmates' goals, and it surprised me how they were a tad different from mine; but once in the courses, we shared the same dream to serve all library users to the best of our abilities and with the most reliable resources available. I geared the courses I took at the UA towards a career in library administration and technology. That is where I want to work, and where I'm employed currently. I know this degree will make it possible for me to move forward in a fulfilling career in the higher-ranks of administration.
My perception of the field became broadened through my studies. There are now many areas of librarianship I feel could fulfill career paths, and I look forward to testing myself to try new positions as they become available. I felt my professors were all supportive, that they gave valuable feedback, and were more partners in the learning process than displaying any hierarchy. As I leave the UA, I'll cherish the memories of my learning experiences and the networking gained. When I experience success, I'll share it with my greater UA network, and when I need guidance, I know there's a wonderful group of staff who will help. As I progress in my career and work with colleagues who share they are interested in higher education, I'll recommend the UA because of the quality of the instructors and my positive experiences.
